A question we often receive is, how do I remove a A question we often receive is, how do I remove a tick? Read below to learn how to check for ticks and how to remove a tick from your pet!

STEP 1: Starting at your pet’s head, use your fingers like a comb and run your hands over your pet’s body. You are feeling for lumps or bumps you previously did not notice. Make sure to check under your pet’s collar, inside the groin area, and under your pet’s front legs. It’s also important to examine under your pet’s tail and between their toes.

STEP 2: Check your pet’s ears thoroughly looking inside and out. Removing a tick as soon as you spot it can reduce the chances of disease transmission. The easiest and safest way to remove a tick is by grasping it as close as possible to the skin with fine-tipped tweezers and pulling it straight out, without squeezing the body.

NEVER try to burn a tick with a match or a candle, or cover it with petroleum jelly, nail polish, perfume, or alcohol—all potentially dangerous things to do.

Call your Vet if you need help!

Attention Sheep and Goat Producers! The Environmen Attention Sheep and Goat Producers! The Environment & Protected Areas in conjunction with Agriculture & Irrigation is offering testing for Myocplasma ovipneumoniae for herds in our area.

Who? The program is directed at sheep/goat producers living in this area.
What? The testing is for Myocplasma ovipneumoniae. This is a bacteria that can cause respiratory disease in our domestic species. It does not typically cause a detrimental infection, however, it poses a great risk to our wildlife species, where whole herds can die-off. Not to worry, this isn’t a reportable or notifiable disease, so there will be no restrictions placed on your herd if they test positive.

When? Testing kits are currently available! There is coverage from the organization for the cost of these tests and the sample collection.
How? Contact your veterinarian and they can send you more information about how to get signed up!

Why? Pioneer Veterinary Clinic has been selected because we are within 50km of known bighorn sheep ranges. The hope is to educate producers and their veterinarians about the zoonotic risks that our domestic animals pose to the wildlife population.

March is Tick Awareness Month! 🪳 Why March? Ti March is Tick Awareness Month! 🪳

Why March? Ticks are looking for a blood meal when outdoor temperatures reach 4 degrees celsius. In many parts of Canada, this can occur very early in the spring or even on warmer days during traditionally cold months — well before many pet owners have even started to think about parasite control.

There’s no denying the fact that concern about ticks is growing. People are finding more ticks on their pets — and themselves. Reported cases of Lyme disease are more frequent. Ticks are a hot topic around the dog park, in the news, and on social media. Waiting for the arrival of warm weather before initiating parasite protection leaves pets vulnerable to ticks.
Since the best time to start protecting pets against ticks is before exposure, March is the ideal time for National Tick Awareness Month!

Call your closest Pioneer Veterinary Services for more information and Tick protection!

Dental disease may look different in cats. Yes, th Dental disease may look different in cats. Yes, they too develop tartar, bad breath, and similar symptoms to dogs. But commonly in cats, their pain or dental disease symptoms are actually caused by something called “Feline Resorptive Lesions”.

Resorptive lesions are an autoimmune disorder specifically targeting the teeth. There are many thoughts as to what causes tooth resorption, though the cause is still unknown. The most common theory is that they are linked to periodontal (dental) disease.

Tooth resorption is a process by which the dentin in a tooth erodes and eventually becomes irreparably destroyed. Over time, all areas of an affected tooth may become involved. As you can imagine, this process is quite painful for our poor little furry friends.

COMMON SIGNS OF RESORPTIVE LESIONS:
🐱These lesions are very sensitive and painful. You may notice your cat dropping their kibble or having difficulty eating.
🐱Muscular spasms or trembling of the jaw whenever the lesion is touched.
🐱Increased salivation.
🐱Oral bleeding.
🐱Decreased appetite.

Treatment is guided with the help of radiographs (x-rays). The most common plan of action is to remove the affected teeth under a general anesthetic. If any of this sounds familiar, please don’t hesitate to call and book an exam or dental consult with one of our great Veterinarians!

What is something you do for your oral health ever What is something you do for your oral health every morning and night? We brush our teeth, floss, and rinse with mouthwash. So why do we not give our pets the same level of care?

Brushing our pet's teeth is much more vital than we realize. Brushing your cat's and dog's teeth even 3 times a week will make a tremendous difference! Just like in people, unhealthy teeth and gums left untreated can lead to serious health problems.

Home dental care promotes healthy teeth and gums by decreasing tartar build-up. Ensure you buy a special brush and toothpaste from your vet, as human brushes and toothpaste are harmful to your pets.

Follow these easy steps on how to implement teeth brushing into your routine! Knowing how to brush your pet’s teeth may seem impossible, but it’s preventative care that is worth the time and energy.

If you have owned a variety of breeds, you have no If you have owned a variety of breeds, you have noticed some develop dental disease and tartar build-up, faster than others!

So which breeds are prone to dental disease you might ask?

For starters, all dogs are susceptible to dental disease. Bacteria in the mouth leads to plaque and tartar formation. Over time, this process results in infection and deep pockets around the teeth caused by bone loss. As the disease progresses, teeth loosen, and pain becomes chronic.

Though every patient and pet is different and they all develop this disease at different rates, some breeds do develop dental disease earlier/faster. Toy/small breeds (pomeranians, chihuahuas, yorkie, maltese, etc.) short-nosed breeds (frenchies, bulldogs, pugs, etc.), dachshunds, boxers, and more are more susceptible to periodontal disease at an earlier age than other breeds.

Though we see this most commonly in practice, this is not true for every dog! How do we prevent dental disease? The gold standard of dental home care for adult dogs is daily brushing!

Stay tuned for more dental tips and facts throughout the month!
