🙌 We’re excited to introduce Dr. Brooke Solom 🙌 We’re excited to introduce Dr. Brooke Solomon as the newest member of the Pioneer Vet Services team. Brooke grew up in the Cochrane area and is thrilled to be returning to the community that has always felt like home. She and her husband live north of Cochrane with their very loveable cat, Emerson, and they’re eagerly preparing to welcome a new puppy to the family soon.

📚 Brooke completed both her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary, where she developed a strong foundation in rural medicine and community care. After graduating, she pursued advanced training through a rotating internship at Littleton Equine Medical Center. During her internship, she gained extensive hands-on experience in equine emergency and critical care, internal medicine, surgery, and sports medicine, with a particular emphasis on managing performance horses and acute medical cases.

At Pioneer, Brooke’s professional interests include small animal surgery, neonatal/foal medicine, and emergency care. She enjoys the fast-paced decision-making of urgent cases and has a special passion for guiding foals through their earliest and most vulnerable stages. She is excited to support both the small animal and equine sides of the practice and is committed to providing thorough, compassionate care to her patients. ❤️

🐴 Outside the clinic, Brooke is deeply involved in the horse community and competes in reining throughout Canada and the United States. When she’s not travelling for shows, she can be found at home spending time with her animals or out riding. ✨

😊 We’re thrilled to have Dr. Solomon’s skill, energy, and community roots as part of the Pioneer Vet Services family. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome!
🎄The Holidays are here, and with them come a lo 🎄The Holidays are here, and with them come a lot of new and delightful decorations, plants, and more! But, along with these new things, come hazards that every pet owner needs to be aware of.

👇 Here are some things to look out for to make sure everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season!

🪴 Toxic plants: poinsettias, evergreens, holly, juniper, mistletoe, and more.
🙀 Tinsel & ribbon: cats love to play with stringy objects, just make sure they don't get their mouths involved.
⚡️ Christmas lights & wires: may electrocute or cause electrical burns
⚠️ Ice melt & antifreeze: can be fatal if ingested!
🔋 Swallowing toys, ornaments, batteries, etc
🍗 Eating your Christmas dinner! There are many foods that don't digest well for our animals, ensuring they don't have access to the garbage or low-level tables.

☎️ If your pet gets into something they shouldn't, don’t hesitate to call us. We wish you and your pets a safe and happy holiday season!

❄️ Winter Safety Tips for Your Pets ❄️ Col ❄️ Winter Safety Tips for Your Pets ❄️
Cold weather is here, and our pets need a little extra help staying safe and comfortable. Here are a few quick reminders to keep them protected this season:

🐾 Keep Outdoor Time Short
Even with fur, pets can get cold fast—especially their ears, tails, and toes. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Keep walks brief, use sweaters for short-coated dogs, and watch for signs of discomfort.

🧦 Protect Those Paws
Salt and ice can irritate or get stuck between toes. Rinse paws after walks, consider pet-safe salt at home, and use booties if needed. Warm water helps melt any ice balls in long fur.

🧊 Avoid Ice
Slippery surfaces can cause injuries, and frozen ponds may not hold a pet’s weight. If you wouldn’t walk on it, don’t let them run on it.

🚗 Be Cautious With Cars
Cars cool down quickly—older, thin-coated, or sick pets are especially at risk. And don’t forget: outdoor cats may hide under warm car hoods, so give your hood a knock before starting the engine.

🔥 Use Heat Safely
If you use heaters or heating pads, ensure pets are supervised to avoid burns or accidents.

🏡 For Outdoor Animals
Provide warm, dry shelter, clean bedding, and a water source that won’t freeze. Avoid metal bowls to prevent tongue injuries.

If you have questions about winter safety or need guidance for your pet, give us a call—we’re here to help!

🦠 EHV-1 / EHM Update We know this can be a wor 🦠 EHV-1 / EHM Update
We know this can be a worrying time for our horse community, and Pioneer Vet is here to ride alongside you every step of the way. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

What You Should Know:
EHV-1 is a contagious virus that can cause fever, respiratory illness, neurologic signs (EHM), and abortions in broodmares. Even vaccinated or previously exposed horses can still be at risk for the neurologic form.

Signs to Keep an Eye On:
• Fever
• Coughing or nasal discharge
• Low energy or off feed
• Wobbliness or weakness
• Urine dribbling / loss of tail tone

If you spot any neurologic signs, give us a call right away.

How It Spreads:
Through the air, horse-to-horse contact, shared tools or tack, clothing/hands, and exposure to aborted material. Horses can shed the virus even when they look healthy.

Good Barnyard Prevention:
• Keep biosecurity tight
• Avoid shared buckets & tack
• Isolate new or returning horses
• Regular temperature checks
• Disinfect barns, trailers & tools
• Vaccines may reduce shedding but won’t prevent the neurologic form

✨ Luna’s Visit to Pioneer Veterinary Services ✨ Luna’s Visit to Pioneer Veterinary Services Sundre ✨

Lovely Luna visited our Sundre clinic for a reproductive examination with Dr. Kelby Tannas, and she truly brightened our day. Caring for mares like Luna is a privilege, and we’re grateful to be part of the journey alongside the horse owners in our community.

Reproductive exams play an important role in supporting the long-term health and well-being of our equine partners. These appointments allow us to:

💛 Make sure mares are healthy and comfortable heading into breeding season
💛 Detect concerns early, before they become bigger health issues
💛 Help owners make informed decisions that support both mare and foal
💛 Promote responsible breeding within our horse community

Healthy mares lead to healthy foals, and healthy foals strengthen the future of our local equine families. We’re here to support you at every stage with compassionate care, honest guidance, and a team that truly loves what we do.
